Tecnobosque · Permanent Records
Wildfire case studies. The record remains.
Explore historical wildfires through incident timelines, documented impacts and source-linked analysis. Browse by country or evidence question, and check each record’s sources and limitations before comparing cases.
Public record index
Structured records built around distinct evidence challenges.
The archive does not rank fires by destruction. Each record tests how different types of evidence, uncertainty and changing official information can be preserved.
Start with a question. Follow the evidence.
Choose a reading path to compare cases that address a shared problem. These are complementary studies, not rankings or identical experiments.
What can fuel treatments change?
Separate vegetation effects, firefighting opportunities and building outcomes.
- Angora 2007 — forest severity and home losses.
- Warm Lake 2007 — treatments interacting with suppression.
- Biscuit 2002 — management history and reburning.
What happens after the flames?
Distinguish hazard forecasts, measured sediment and recovery outcomes.
- Hayman 2002 — runoff and sediment are different measures.
- Las Conchas 2011 — forecasts and measured river change.

- Mati 2018 — rapid spread and the time available.
- Chimney Tops 2, 2016 — Gatlinburg evacuation evidence.
- Compare Mati and Gatlinburg — a cross-case reading of time and warnings.

Choose your research question
Where should you start?
Use these reading paths to explore a specific evidence problem. Each incident retains its own sources, definitions and limitations.
How does fire spread through neighbourhoods?
Start with Waldo Canyon for the NIST reconstruction of cascading structure ignitions. Continue with Marshall for a wind-driven urban-edge case. Ask which observations document exposure, ignition or building performance; these are different questions.
For loss accounting, read Valley and Glass: buildings, dwelling units and displaced people require different evidence.
What can observations reveal?
Read Carr for fire-vortex, radar and satellite evidence. Pair it with Rim to examine satellite limitations and fuel-treatment evidence. Check the observation time and what each instrument can actually resolve.
Park 2024 shows why area growth is not front speed, and why dated operational updates must be checked before combining their figures.
Which clock does a timeline use?
Explore Eaton, Lahaina and Fort McMurray. Separate fire progression, warning issuance, warning receipt and movement. A precise timestamp alone does not establish what every resident knew.
Tamarack separates the information available during initial response from knowledge of the eventual outcome.
What happens after the flames?
Use Thomas to follow the distinction between wildfire and the later Montecito debris-flow event. Continue with Caldor for watershed evidence. Keep each event’s dates, geographic footprint and impact totals attached to its source.
Mosquito introduces the distinction between modeled debris-flow hazards and a published inventory of measured deposits.
How does a cause record develop?
Read Tubbs, Dixie and Camp. Compare the type and date of the supporting documentation. A documented ignition finding does not by itself explain all subsequent spread or consequences.
Follow Kincade and Zogg for later findings that supersede old operational labels. Atlas examines two ignition locations and conflicting start dates.
Are two totals measuring the same thing?
Start with Palisades for differences in official structure-loss totals and Black Saturday for multi-fire event scope. Before comparing values, check the unit, place, date and definition.
Use Nuns, August and LNU to distinguish merged-event totals from component or county totals. SCU tests reporting precision; Beckwourth tests dataset versions; Butte exposes an inconsistent location field.
Time available or time needed?
Read the Mati–Gatlinburg comparison to distinguish modelled fire-arrival windows from residents’ recalled decisions. A worked example separates warning receipt, preparation and travel time.
Protection under what exposure?
Compare Witch–Guejito, Cerro Grande and Lytton. Examine exposure, local ignition conditions and defensive actions before attributing survival to a single building feature.
North Complex examines why unfavorable outcomes at seven mapped treatment sites cannot establish a universal treatment effect.
What does recovery measure?
Follow Las Conchas for sediment movement, Bastrop for tree mortality and planting, and Jasper for property rebuilding. These indicators answer different questions and should remain separate.
These are editorial reading paths, not a severity ranking or a new confidence assessment. The evidence comparison matrix identifies its own five-pilot scope and scored claims.
Geographic coverage
An international archive built carefully, not rapidly.
Geographic expansion depends on retrievable evidence, analytical value and the capacity to maintain every permanent record responsibly.
Community ignition, evacuation, firefighter safety, fuel-treatment evidence, prescribed-fire escapes and long-term watershed and ecosystem recovery, from Peshtigo 1871 to the 2025 California cases.
Nine studies across Alberta, British Columbia and Nova Scotia: community fire spread, evacuation, changing measurements, investigation records and recovery.
Thirty-one Australian case studies: fire reconstruction, changing cause findings, agricultural fires, evacuation, habitat loss and community recovery.
Portugal, Greece and Spain: merging fronts, evacuation, remote sensing, forest regeneration, emergency restoration and post-fire flood susceptibility.
Trinitarias and Las Máquinas: transmission infrastructure, local restoration evidence, burn severity and the limits of applying regional statistics to one incident.
Tenerife, Spain: the Arafo fire footprint and restoration inside Teide National Park.
Unknown or incomplete evidence will never be replaced with artificial certainty to fill the map.
Permanent record standard
What can grow inside every archive record.
Records may expand as evidence matures while retaining the same canonical identity and permanent URL.
Incident overview
Identity, geography, jurisdiction, dates, extent and current documented impacts.
Fire timeline
Dated incident events, spread milestones, response and critical transitions.
Known At
The documented information available at a particular historical moment.
Cause history
Earlier cause states, investigation milestones and current technical findings.
Forensic reconstruction
Origin context, possible mechanisms, supporting evidence and remaining gaps.
Evidence states
Observed, reported, derived, interpreted, disputed, superseded or unknown.
Fire DNA
A controlled public summary of the incident’s technical characteristics.
Sources and citation
Retrievable primary sources, record version and a stable citation identity.
Superseded does not mean false.
A value may have been the best documented information available at one moment and later be replaced for current use. Tecnobosque preserves that earlier state instead of erasing it with hindsight.
Permanent records preserve both the current assessment and the history of how that assessment developed.
Do not lose the incident when the updates stop.
