Torre de l’Espanyol Fire 2019 — Comparing two Copernicus perimeters

Ribera d’Ebre · Catalonia · Spain · 26 June 2019 · Copernicus EMSR365

The Torre de l’Espanyol fire began on 26 June. Copernicus EMS issued a first estimate on 27 June, then delineation products based on imagery from 28 and 29 June. An overlay of the latter two products for the same area of interest gives 99.988% intersection over union. The area represented in only one of the two footprints is about 0.60 hectares. These values describe the published mapping products.

What the operational record adds

Bombers describes an initial attack on the tail and evacuation work at isolated rural properties. The analysis identifies several possible control lines and describes the C-12 between Flix and Maials as an axis used to limit expansion towards further forest. The right flank was difficult to work because ravines opened across the direction of advance. These details explain the response choices that an outline alone cannot show. Use the observedEventA GeoJSON layer from each vector package. Both layers contain 485 wildfire polygon features and use the same AOI. Reproject from longitude and latitude to EPSG:3035, correct invalid polygons and dissolve. The calculation found 26 invalid projected features per input. GEOS MakeValid was applied to those features and polygonal parts were retained. A zero-width buffer sensitivity check gave the same dissolved areas at the displayed precision. Divide the intersection by the union for the overlap percentage. 28 June vector package · 29 June vector package

Evidence limits

The monitoring image was acquired 24 h 42 min after the first delineation image. The map delivery dates are recorded separately in the activation. The overlap calculation compares the mapped boundaries at those acquisition times. To infer the fire’s path or the effects of suppression between them would require time-resolved observations and the mapping detection limits. Copernicus EMS activation and product history
