What happened

A wind-driven fire began above Eaton Wash, developed through changing directional spread and ultimately produced a community conflagration with catastrophic structural and human loss.

Operational reports, later agency records and formal investigations answered different questions at different times. Earlier states remain visible rather than being rewritten by hindsight.

Question

What initiated the Eaton Fire and how did the first-night documented sequence evolve?

Origin context. The official investigation places the origin in dry receptive fuel below transmission towers on the spur ridge above Eaton Wash.

Current finding. Electrical arcing events on an out-of-service SCE tower.

  1. High winds grounded aircraft, limiting real-time aerial fire-spread intelligence.
  2. The published reconstruction describes an initial eastward movement.
  3. Terrain and wind alignment changed, followed by westward pushes.
  4. West-of-Lake evacuation orders had been issued by 03:25.
  5. The reconstructed main front was west of Lake Avenue by about 05:13.
  6. A later review clarified an earlier, broader interpretation of late-evening evacuation communications.
Remaining uncertainty. Physically possible hypotheses are not promoted without specific supporting evidence. “Unknown,” “unresolved” and null values are valid technical outcomes.
