What is fire weather?
Fire weather applies meteorological observations and forecasts to wildland fire. The important variables depend on the decision: wind and humidity may dominate near-surface fire behaviour, while stability, mixing height and transport wind become important for smoke and plume behaviour.
A fire-weather value has meaning only in context. The same wind or relative humidity can produce very different outcomes in wet fuels, cured grass, heavy timber, steep terrain or an already intense fire. For that reason, fire-weather analysis should preserve the station, time, forecast product and fuel context used.
Why it matters
Weather can change fire spread and suppression conditions rapidly, but its effect depends on whether fuels are dry and receptive, on terrain, and on the fire itself. Operational products therefore combine meteorology with fuel and incident context rather than treating a single threshold as universal.
Fire weather is not one number. It is the combined weather context around a fire: wind, humidity, temperature, stability, precipitation, lightning and other conditions interpreted together with fuels.
What belongs in a fire-weather assessment?
Wind can tilt flames, increase convective heating, transport embers and rapidly change which parts of the perimeter are exposed.
RH influences the atmospheric moisture environment and the drying or recovery target of dead fuels, especially fine fuels.
Temperature changes saturation vapor pressure and can affect RH, fuel heating and atmospheric stability.
Recent wetting and longer-term drying affect whether fuels are receptive to ignition and sustained spread.
Dry or limited-rain thunderstorms can create new ignitions, gust fronts and abrupt wind changes.

- Do not treat Red Flag thresholds from one jurisdiction as a universal physical boundary.
Fire weather in incident reconstruction
In incident reconstruction, a timestamped weather forecast can show what conditions were expected at a particular moment, while later station observations show what was measured. These are different evidence objects and should not be merged retrospectively.
