Wildland–urban interface loss is not explained by distance to vegetation alone. Embers can travel ahead of the flame front, accumulate in receptive locations and enter openings; radiant and convective heat can challenge vulnerable components; combustible attachments and near-structure fuels can bridge exposure to the building; and burning structures can become sources for further structure-to-structure spread. The useful engineering question is therefore not simply “How close is the fire?” but “What exposure reaches which receptor, for how long, and with what resistance?”
