A firebrand is a burning or glowing piece of combustible material that is transported from a fire and can ignite receptive fuels or structures away from the original flame zone.
What is firebrand?
Firebrands can originate from vegetation, bark, woody material or burning structures. Their size, shape, burning state and aerodynamic behaviour influence how far they travel and whether they remain capable of ignition.
Not every firebrand produces a spot fire. Successful ignition also depends on where it lands, the receptivity of the target fuel and environmental conditions.
Why it matters
Firebrands can cross roads, defensible-space zones and other breaks in continuous surface fuel. In WUI fires they are a major pathway for structure ignition.
Firebrands are the particles; spotting is the process that occurs when transported firebrands start new fires ahead of or away from the main fire.

Why it matters in wildfire analysis
Firebrand showers can arrive before the main flame front and can continue after local flame passage. This creates a distributed ignition problem rather than a single advancing line.
In dense communities, burning structures can become new firebrand sources, linking vegetation-driven exposure to structure-to-structure spread.
Limitations and boundaries
- Firebrand transport is highly variable and cannot be represented reliably by a single universal distance.
- Absence of a visible large ember does not rule out smaller firebrand-driven ignition.
- A Zone 0 calculation does not model firebrand aerodynamics or building vulnerability.
