What is defensible space?

Defensible space changes the fuels and combustible pathways immediately surrounding a building. Near the structure, small details can matter because embers can accumulate and ignite receptive materials.

Farther from the building, spacing, pruning, fuel continuity and access become more important. The exact zone framework and legal requirements depend on jurisdiction.

Defensible space links landscape treatment to structure exposure from flames, radiant heat and embers. Geometry can be calculated, but treatment decisions remain site-specific.
