Method
Usable-energy runtime model
C = nominal battery capacity in Wh
η = assumed conversion efficiency
R = reserve fraction retained
P = continuous load in watts
t = C × η × (1 − R) ÷ P
Estimate portable power runtime
Battery capacity alone does not determine operating time.
Conversion losses, retained reserve and the actual continuous
power draw all reduce the energy available to equipment.
This calculator converts nominal battery capacity into an
estimated usable-energy budget and divides that energy by
the entered continuous load.
Size a battery from the runtime you need
The two sizing cards calculate the nominal battery capacity
required to support the current load for eight or twenty-four
hours using the same efficiency and reserve assumptions.
This makes the calculator useful in both directions:
estimate runtime from an existing battery or estimate battery
capacity from a desired operating period.
Important limitation
Important:
real battery runtime can differ because of inverter standby
consumption, temperature, battery chemistry, battery age,
surge loads, variable equipment demand, manufacturer limits
and the power station’s own protection systems.
