Why can a wildfire record change over time?
Because operational estimates, damage counts, perimeter mapping and investigation findings mature at different speeds and can legitimately supersede earlier statements.
Early incident reporting is optimized for operations, not historical finality. Area estimates can be replaced by mapped perimeters; structure counts can change after damage assessment; cause information can move from unknown to preliminary classification to final investigative finding; names and jurisdictions can be reconciled after the fact. A trustworthy record should therefore keep earlier claims attached to their source and publication time while clearly identifying the current assessment.
