In plain language
Active firefighting actions intended to reduce exposure to a structure, extinguish ignitions or improve its chance of surviving a WUI fire.
Why it matters
Structure Defense is useful because it separates one specific part of wildfire behaviour, exposure, operations or evidence from nearby concepts that can otherwise be mixed together.
What does structure defense mean in a wildfire?
Structure defense is active firefighting work around threatened buildings during a wildland-urban interface fire. The objective is to reduce exposure, address ignitions and improve the chance that a structure survives while keeping firefighter safety as the primary constraint.
Structure defense is not the same as home hardening
Home hardening describes measures completed before a fire, such as reducing vulnerable openings and improving ignition resistance. Structure defense describes incident-time firefighting actions. The two concepts complement each other but are not interchangeable.
What affects structure-defense decisions?
Incident conditions can include fire intensity, arrival time, access and egress, surrounding fuels, building vulnerability, available resources and whether a safe operating area exists. Those decisions are incident-specific and belong to trained response personnel.
