Llançà Fire 2021 — Fuel treatments and the next ridge

Llançà · Serra de Rodes · Catalonia · Spain · 16–19 July 2021

The Girona operations analysis lists 430.35 hectares for the Llançà fire. Its account gives the final footprint alongside a larger set of places that could be reached if the fire passed specific terrain features. That distinction explains why containment at a ridge or a treated sector mattered even where the final perimeter remained some distance away.

Timeline of the response

  1. 16 July, 13:25. Bombers records the alert. The report describes a northerly wind interacting with the relief and fuels in the Serra de Rodes.
  2. 17 July. The campaign review describes approximately 400 hectares at Llançà. It is a rounded figure during the event. Generalitat 2021 campaign review
  3. 18 July. The operations report records stabilisation at 08:40 and control at 19:56. The recorded interval between these two milestones was 11 h 16 min.
  4. 19 July, 20:50. The operations report records extinction. Girona Bombers incident analysis and chronology

Potential spread and treatment opportunities

Footprint and scenarios from the incident analysis
AreaMeaning
430.35 haIncident surface reported by the Girona operations analysis
About 1,100 haFirst potential scenario towards the Coll de Sant Genís on the seaward slope
About 600 additional haFurther potential if spread opened via the Coll de Perer towards the Mas Ventós and Mas Fumats area

The report links the observed spread to changes in the direction and force of the tramuntana as it interacted with the terrain. It identifies fuel treatments, including vegetation management and grazing, as contributors to containment opportunities at specific places. At Mas Fumats it describes the interaction of those treatments with local wind and relief. The record is most informative at the level of those sectors, where a treatment can be linked to a particular operational opportunity.

Evidence limits

The potential areas describe scenarios considered in the tactical analysis. A causal estimate of hectares saved by a treatment would require comparable untreated terrain, a reconstruction of fire behaviour and details of the response. The campaign review and the operations report also use different levels of area precision, so their difference cannot establish a rate of spread.
