Carboentes · Rodeiro, Pontevedra · 8–12 August 2026
A search for the August 2026 “Rodeiro fire” returns an apparent contradiction: on the morning of 10 August the fire was both stabilized and controlled. The original bulletin resolves it. Two fires were being tracked in the same municipality. Carboentes was controlled; Arnego was still classified as stabilized. Using the municipality alone as the record identifier would give both fires the wrong history.
Following Carboentes through the bulletins
The 9 August morning update names both parishes. It dates stabilization in Arnego to 00:50 and in Carboentes to 09:17. Both estimates at that stage exceeded 20 hectares. Area alone would therefore be a poor way to distinguish the two records.
In the 10 August morning update, the Xunta placed control of Carboentes at 22:48 the previous evening. The date that belongs beside the control time is 9 August, even though the bulletin reporting it was dated the 10th. The estimate for Carboentes was then approximately 20 hectares.
The final Carboentes notice gives the start as 16:03 on Saturday 8 August and extinction as 08:11 on Wednesday 12 August. It reports 18.8 hectares affected: 12.2 wooded and 6.6 open. Those components sum to the final total. They are not additional hectares to add to it.
Why a 20-hectare cutoff changes the sample
Suppose a researcher selects all incidents that reached 20 hectares. Using the provisional 9 August bulletin would include Carboentes. Applying the same rule to the final figure would exclude it. Neither selection is reproducible unless the researcher says whether the threshold applies to an estimate available during operations or to the final account. The difference does not establish that a burned area physically contracted.
What can be compared
For a study of public information, keep each bulletin and its parish-specific estimate. For a comparison of final fire sizes, use 18.8 hectares and retain the distinction between wooded and open ground. Neither category measures burn severity. The final notice also lists resources mobilized cumulatively; it cannot establish how many crews or aircraft worked simultaneously. The bulletins are successive records from one authority, rather than independent measurements of the perimeter.
