Editorial review: 21 September 2026 · Version 1
Snapshot
A small footprint with direct structure impact.
The Palos Fire is listed at 17 acres and 80% containment near Lupin Hill Road and Las Palomas Drive in Whittier. Los Angeles County Fire Department is the agency having jurisdiction.
CAL FIRE’s damage assessment lists four structures damaged.
One civilian injury and one firefighter injury are reported; no fatalities are listed.
Evolution of knowledge
The first three hours changed the picture.
CAL FIRE explicitly attributed the reduction from 20 to 17 acres to more accurate mapping, making this a clean example of why early acreage should be treated as provisional.
WUI signal
Small acreage does not mean small consequence.
Palos is useful because its footprint was small while structures were directly affected. Acreage alone therefore says little about consequence in the wildland–urban interface.
Evacuations were issued during initial attack; CAL FIRE reported all evacuation orders lifted by 5:51 PM on 14 September. What does “forward progress stopped” mean? →
The incident moved from 41% containment on the first evening to 70% on 15 September and 80% on 17 September.
